Game Design Camp
Do you have a passion for games and want to create your own?
Our Game Design camp is a perfect next step to improve programming and design skills while studying what you enjoy. Learn the theory and techniques needed for creating games, as well as other forms of non-linear art.
Each morning begins with a presentation and discussion exposing students to critical aspects of game development, followed by hands on learning and coding. During the afternoon students are given the opportunity to focus on select topics working alone or with peers along with the support of our instructors. Students are encouraged to both explore new areas of the game development process and focus on the topics and skills they enjoy the most.
At Start Code, our small instructor to student ratio provides customized learning. Unlike other camps, our instructors have degrees in Computer Science and STEAM-focused fields.

Here are some things to know about the camp
Camps instruction runs from 9:00-3:30 every day with drop off beginning at 8:30am. Pick up is between 3:30-5:00pm which will be after-care time (no additional fee) including options for multiplayer gaming.
A morning snack is provided. Students bring their own lunch.
Camp is open to middle and high school students in grades 6-12 in fall 2019
On Friday parents and family are invited to a showcase highlighting student skills and projects.
There is a $150 deposit per camp. In case of early cancellation, $50 is non-refundable. In case of cancellation within 14 days of camp, the entire $150 deposit is non-refundable.
Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops (Windows or Mac). Laptops are available for rent for an additional fee of $50/week.

Unity is used to create games and interactive environments in both 2D and 3D. It is beginner friendly with many resources available to new users, yet powerful enough for professional developers. Unity is used to make applications for mobile, desktop, and gaming consoles with many well-known titles.
C# (pronounced “C-sharp”) is a programming language created by Microsoft. It is object-oriented and was designed to combine the power of C++ with the ease of use of Visual Basic. Because of this heritage, C# is also similar to Java with many of the same features and object-oriented methodologies. If students have done any coding with Java in the past, in our Starter Labs for instance, then the move to C# feels natural.
However, don’t be intimated! We explain all code used in class and discuss how it works. Students can delve deeper with our instructors help if they wish or they can focus on the code used for the projects and learn as they go along.
Blender 3D Modeling
Blender is the free and open source 3D creation suite used across industries from video games and films to television by individual artists and small teams. 3D Modeling is a creative and technical process used to create characters and objects for production. In video games especially, all of the objects and characters you see are created from scratch using 3D software like Blender. Artists often use a 2D concept drawing as a guide to digitally sculpt a 3D model of the character or object. After the model is complete, it is then ready to be prepared for animation. Character animations are created to bring the objects to life and are also done in Blender to make the actions or expressions that the character will use.
Industry and Polish
Today it's easier than ever to not only make a game, but also get your game out for others to play and even turn a profit. We discuss avenues for publishing video games and apps to a digital storefront, the best methods of polishing a game for your audience, and marketing and promotion. Students take the time to make sure their game projects are the best product they can be, and come up with a solid plan on how to either develop their idea further, how to distribute it when it’s done, or how to construct a comprehensive pitch for a new one.
